Comprehensive Pediatric Obesity Care

Childhood obesity is more than just a weight issue—
it’s about your child’s overall growth and metabolic health.
Childhood obesity isn’t just about “baby fat” or being a little chubby. It can directly impact your child’s growth rate, puberty progression, hormone balance, and metabolic health. At Tuntun Children’s Hospital, we don’t just look at the numbers on a scale. We provide precision obesity care by comprehensively evaluating your child’s developmental stage, body composition, lifestyle habits, and metabolic status.
The Rise of Childhood Obesity:
Why Does It Matter?
Obesity during a child’s growing years can lead to several health complications. It is a common misconception that “it’s okay because they are growing taller, too.” Relying on this belief can cause you to miss underlying growth issues, making a comprehensive assessment of both physical growth and metabolism essential.
- Precocious puberty and early onset of adolescence
- Reduced final adult height due to the early closure of growth plates
- Metabolic disorders, including fatty liver, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia
- A higher likelihood of transitioning into adult obesity

Key Signs to Watch For
If you notice any of the following,
a professional obesity evaluation may be necessary for your child:
Key Symptoms
Weight gain that is faster than peers; fat accumulating primarily around the abdomen; tiring easily with decreased physical activity; eating large portions or frequent snacking; and suspected early signs of precocious puberty.
Our Approach to Diagnostic Testing
Our diagnostic process isn’t about running unnecessary tests. Instead, it is a structured, step-by-step evaluation designed to identify actual risk factors specific to your child.
Principles of Step-by-Step Testing
- We prioritize monitoring growth and weight changes first.
- We never perform unnecessary medical tests.
- We interpret all test results holistically alongside your child’s overall growth progress.

Diagnostic Evaluation Flow
Here is what you can expect during your child’s assessment.
STEP 01. Initial Obesity Pattern Assessment
We compare your child’s height, weight, and BMI against standard pediatric growth charts to determine if it is simple weight gain or a level of obesity that could impact their growth and metabolism.
If within the normal range or showing low risk factors:
→ Lifestyle management + Regular observation
If weight gain is rapid or
likely to impact growth and puberty:
→ Proceed to the next testing stage
STEP 02. Precision Metabolic Evaluation (Blood Tests & Ultrasound)
Based on the initial assessment, we may recommend the following tests only if deemed medically necessary.
Blood Tests
- Blood glucose and insulin levels
- Lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.)
- Liver function tests
- Thyroid function tests (to rule out underlying causes of obesity)
Ultrasound Scans (Analyzed alongside blood test results)
Because simple changes in body shape or weight don’t tell the whole story, we use ultrasounds to comprehensively assess fat distribution and the condition of internal organs for a highly accurate diagnosis.
How We Interpret
Test Results
Pediatric obesity cannot be diagnosed based on a single number. We take a holistic approach, carefully analyzing the following factors together:
- 1 Growth rate and the status of growth plates
- 2 The pattern and duration of weight gain
- 3 Findings from blood panels and ultrasounds
- 4 Your child’s exact age and current stage of puberty
Our Approach
to Treatment
The ultimate goal of pediatric obesity treatment isn’t simply “losing weight.”
It is about safely managing and regulating weight in a way that supports—and never harms—your child’s healthy growth and overall well-being.
A Lifestyle-First Approach
→ Dietary habit analysis and realistic meal adjustments
→ Increasing physical activity and improving exercise habits
→ Family-centered lifestyle modifications
Tailored Management Based on Growth & Puberty Stages
If precocious puberty or growth abnormalities are present:
→ We conduct concurrent growth and puberty evaluations.
Medication Only When Strictly Necessary
→ We do not prescribe medication universally. It is considered only when deemed medically necessary, and always decided carefully in close consultation with parents.
What Parents Should Know
A Message
to Parents
- Childhood obesity is not a short-term issue to be “fixed” quickly; it requires steady management throughout your child’s entire growth journey.
- In many cases, careful observation is sufficient without the need for active medical treatment.
- Often, lifestyle adjustments alone are enough to see excellent results.
- When necessary, we conduct re-evaluations after a set period to adjust the care plan.
- Tuntun Children’s Hospital is dedicated to precision obesity care—focusing not just on your child’s current weight, but on their long-term health and future potential.
